Can I grow Davidson Plums in a pot?

Actually I do have some growing at home in Victoria in a pot, so the answer is yes!  Really look after them ensure that they get conditions as close as possible to tropical and subtropical conditions.  ie make sure they are in well drained soil, get sun, free from cold winds and frost.

Growing conditions and how to grow Davidson Plums

Davidson Plums grow naturally in tropical and sub tropical climates.

They enjoy a well-drained rich soil, so mulching with organic matter is important.  Soil should be slightly acidic.

Look for a sunny to shaded position to grow, avoid the really hot sun on their leaves.  I put some in pots in a glass house in Victoria, they were fine, but forgot to take them out on a really hot day, so all the leaves got burnt.  I took them home and put them in the bath and “mothered” them for quite a few weeks till growth happened.  So be careful.

If you’re planting outside its best in the Spring.  As with most trees, dig a hole twice as wide and deep as the root ball.  Put the tree in the hole, backfill with soil and water straight away.

Don’t forget to keep the water up.

Mulching

apply a layer around the base of the tree to maintain moisture and it will also suppress weeks.
Fertilise the tree in Spring and Summer to promote growth and fruiting.

You can also prune the trees to maintain shape

Remove any dead or diseased branches, this will certainly help new growth.
Watch out for any pests that affect plum trees in general.  Possums can also be a real problem, they eat the leaves, so am keep potted plants out of harms way!
