Are Curries Healthy for You?
Yes, curries can be really healthy for you, they don’t have to be full of saturated fats to make it taste amazing.
Spices used in curries such as ginger, chilli, turmeric are well-known for their anti-inflammatory properties, they can also help with weight loss as they have been shown to boost metabolism. They can also benefit heart health.
Capsaicin is the compound responsible for heat in the chilli pepper. This has been linked to helping pain relief, improve digestion and potentially weight loss.
Curries in hot climates
In hot, humid areas, spicy food can make you sweat more and this moisture ie sweat, helps cool down your body. It’s a natural way to regulate body temperature.
Food Preservation
Chilli was used not only for flavour but it also is a preservative. The hotness of chillies inhibited the growth of bacteria in hot climates, therefore a longer shelf life.
Are curries high in calories?
This is really dependant on how you make it and a good reason to make your own curry. It doesn’t have to be high in salt, carbs, fats or sugars. When you make the curry, you control the ingredients!
Create your own culinary experience!
Tantalising aromas, vibrant colours plus the explosion of flavour create a culinary experience like no other. I absolutely love making my bush curries, it was one of the first fusion with Australian native botanicals that I did. I still use a lot of Lemon myrtle, Anise myrtle, Native Peppers plus many more, sometimes at whim! 15 years on and I’m still making and loving the experience of all the colour, aroma and flavour of this creative experience.
Curries have a rich history throughout the world. So many countries, like Australia, have claimed curries as their own. Each offering their own take on the original Indian curry with their unique blend of spices and ingredients that excite the taste buds and warm the soul.
Celebrate the flavour and aromas of this amazing blend of spices
Curries are such a celebration of flavour. They can be chilli laden and extremely hot, to subtle but still full of spicy richness. You can add cream or- coconut milk to create a creamier curry, but also use a great stock to avoid the richness.
Like always when you work with blending herbs and spices you need to get the balance right. A good knowledge of your flavours and their profiles is important, I’d say essential. The harmonious blend of the spices used creates the depth of flavour to your whole dish. So you must get it right.
Australia’s Multi-cultural heritage
In Australia, we are a multi-cultural country, our food is uniquely diverse reflecting Australian communities. Often our culinary techniques and uses of our own bush ingredients have not only stretched outside the traditional boundaries, but have opened the doors to many exciting and new eating experiences.
The influx of immigrants from South Asia, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, have played a significant role in shaping the curry scene in Australia. I have found the blending of spices from all these countries with Australian bush herbs has shown just how diverse our native food is and how it can play such an interesting role in our muli-cultural diet. The bonus for me is that so many people within the hospitality industry, schools and home cooks are still enjoying them.
Originally curries were made in India and different variations were used all over the country. Now we have Thai Curry, Japanese curries and Australian curries and many more. Each of these variations have adapted to their new homeland with their own culinary story to tell.
The history of Australian curries alone is a reminder of the wonderful power of food that brings families and all people together, creating long-lasting memories.
The Ultimate Comfort Food
Curries are the ultimate comfort food! To make a curry it can be done as a quick stir fry. But the longer version where the aromatics become very much a part of the experience when slow cooking, particularly on a cold night, really offer comfort and warmth on what is to come. Perfect in front of the telly watching a good footy game!
