Traditional Uses of Lemon Myrtle by Aboriginal People

For thousands of years, Aboriginal Australians have valued lemon myrtle as both a food and a natural medicine. Growing naturally in the subtropical rainforests of Queensland and northern New South Wales, this aromatic plant was an important part of traditional life and wellbeing.

The leaves were crushed to release their strong, refreshing citrus scent and used for their healing and cleansing properties.

Infusions

made from the leaves were used to help soothe coughs, colds, and sore throats.  Often the crushed leaves would be soaked in water and then placed over a fire, the mist would then be breathed in.

The natural oils

were valued for their antibacterial and antiseptic qualities. The pleasant aroma also made lemon myrtle useful in purifying water and repelling insects.

In cooking

the leaves were sometimes added to flavour foods, imparting a gentle lemon taste to meats and fish cooked over the fire. Its versatility and abundance made it a trusted and respected plant within many Aboriginal communities.
